FACTS FOR JANUARY

New Year

January was established as the first month of the year by the Roman Calendar.  It was named after the god Janus (Latin word for door).  Janus had two faces which allowed him to look both backwards into the old year and forwards into the new one at the same time.

New Years Day

New Years day is the first day of the year, in the Gregorian calendar.

Traditions

In Britain the custom of first footing is practiced.  The first male visitor to the house after midnight is usually supposed to bring good luck.  Usually they bring a gift like money, bread or coal which is done to ensure the family will have plenty of these things in the year to come.

Auld Lang Syne

The song Auld Lang Syne, is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English speaking country in the world to bring in the New Year.

The song partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's was first published in 1796 after Burns' death.

Words

English Translation

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind . Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne .

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !  And surely I’ll buy mine ! And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine ; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine (dinner time) ; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend ! And give us a hand o’ thine ! And we’ll take a right good-will draught, for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

1) Air France's new transatlantic flight from London Heathrow to Los Angeles is now on sale! This daily flight will be operated by a Boeing 777 as from 30th March 2008, with the following schedules: AF060 departing from London Heathrow at 1700, arriving in Los Angeles at 2015 AF061 departing from Los Angeles at 2025, arriving in London Heathrow at 1440 the following day

2) Easyjet began daily flights from Birmingham to Geneva on the 14th December.  This has been followed by a twice weekly service from Birmingham to Grenoble which started on 22nd December 2007.

3) Virgin Atlantic has opened its new terminal at Heathrow Terminal 3 which is expected to give passengers a smoother journey through the airport.  The airline says its business check-in, the Upper Class Wing, boasts the fastest check-in in the world, making it possible to transfer from limo to lounge in minutes, partly due to a dedicated security corridor.

4) Zoom Airlines starts two new transatlantic routes to Fort Lauderdale and San Diego from Gatwick for 2008.  The twice weekly Fort Lauderdale route will start in May.  Return fares start from £399 return including taxes.  From June 2008 Zoom will offer the only direct air service between Europe and San Diego also operating twice weekly with prices starting at £449 return including taxes.

5) Airport Security - January 2008:  BAA and Visit London have welcomed the government's confirmation that it is to reverse the decision to restrict airline carry-on hand luggage to one item.

The limit is to be lifted from January but security is to be stepped up at UK airports, railway stations and ports as part of anti-terrorism measures outlined by  Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Travellers will have to provide a range of information requested when they buy tickets as part of planned electronic checks.

Improved security is to be introduced at the 250 busiest railway stations as well as airports, ports and more than 100 other locations, with guidance going out to hotels, restaurants, sports arenas, cinemas and theatres.

Meanwhile, Gordon Brown said that airports would be able to seek permission from January 7 to allow passengers to take more than a single item of hand luggage onto flights. Size limits on liquids and cabin baggage will remain.

Transport secretary Ruth Kelly said: "I hope to see rapid progress across the whole country - with all airports submitting plans over the next few months.

"But some may need to enforce baggage restrictions to ensure that acceptable security standards are maint
ained throughout. Equally, some airlines may choose to keep bag restrictions for their own operational reasons.

"This is not about relaxing security. It's about allowing airports to take advantage of smarter technologies and improved processes to deliver a better service to the passenger."
