May Day
(Garland Day)
In Britain, as in most
parts of Western Europe, May day marked the end of
the harsh winter months, welcomed the beginning of
Summer, and optimistically looked forward to the
bright and productive months.
May Day
Superstition First thing in
the morning on May 1st, young girls used to rush
out into the garden to wash their faces in the May
dew. Why? There is an old tale that says that May
dew has magic properties and that anyone who washed their face in it will have a beautiful
complexion all through the year. This dew was supposed to be able to remove freckles, spots
& pimples.

1) BA
Drops Manchester to New York
British
Airways is to suspend daily flights from Manchester to
New York JFK in October 2008. The Boeing 767
aircraft that operates the service is to be moved
to Heathrow. But the airline is to start serving
New York from Gatwick with daily flights from
October 27th 2008. BA will also start new short
haul routes from Gatwick this October with daily
services to Oporto & Valencia. Second daily services
from Gatwick to Alicante and Turin will also be added
from the end of October. Flights to Warsaw will move
from Gatwick to Heathrow at the same
time.
2) New Seaplane
Service A daily direct air link from
Glasgow to Mull has taken off as a second destination
for Loch Lomond Seplanes. The new summer service
to Tobermory Bay reduces the travelling time to and from
Glasgow to 35 minutes. Travelling by road and
ferry between can take five and a half hours or
more. The introduction of the flights using a
nine-seat aircraft follows the company running a daily
service between the River Clyde in Glasgow and Oban on
the west coast of Scotland. Loch Lomond Seaplanes plans
to expand services with a third aircraft later this year
and have up to five seaplanes operating to destinations
such as Portree, Bute & Arran in the near
future.
3) Flybe
check-in kiosks Flybe passsengers will benefit
from 64 new Self Service check-in kiosks, built and
installed by ARINC Incorporated. The kiosks are
stationed at 13 UK regional airports, from Aberdeen and
Inverness in the north to Newquay and Cornwall in the
south, plus Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel
Islands. "We are committed to getting the seven
million passengers a year we carry through our airports
in the UK and Europe as quickly and efficiently as
possible," said Flybe director of marketing Simon
Lilley. "The machines minimise queing and really
speed up the check-in process. Since the first
kiosks went live in 2006, we have been very pleased with
passenger feedback." ARINC kiosks are now active at 100
airports worldwide, including its largest operation at
London Heathrow Terminals 1,2 and 3.
4)
Chauffeur service to
Mumbai
Emirates
has started a new complimentary chauffeur service for
First & Business class customers arriving or
departing from Mumbai's Chatrapathi Shivaji
Airport. Passengers will be driven to and from any
Mumbai home or business address within 50km (30miles) of
the airport. The airline will use a fleet of
Mercerdes-Benz C Class vehicles for the service. The
cars are equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS)
Trackers to provide real time information on their
location.
5)
Marriott in Hong Kong Marriott
International has opened its first Courtyard hotel in
Hong Kong under a management agreement with Tsinlien
Realty Ltd. Courtyard by Marriott offers 245 guestrooms
which include glass top work desks and high speed
internet access. There is a business centre with two
computers, boardroom, executive lounge and 24hr fitness
centre. In addition the Marriott group has also
added another property to its portfolio in Rome, Italy.
The 162 room Hotel Central Park Rome will be
re-branded the Courtyard by Marriott Rome Central Park
under a new franchise agreement coming into effect later
this year. The hotel will remain open to
guests while renovations are
completed.
6)
Malaysia Airlines opens Lounge
Malaysia Airlines has opened its Regional Golden Lounge
at Kuala Lumpur International Airport offering premier
travellers various useful amenities. It is open to First
& Business Class passengers, as well as Enrich
Platinum and Gold members - regardless of what class
they are travelling in - and Silver members if they
redeem miles (on a per entrance basis). Located on level
5 of the main terminal building, services and facilities
to help travellers relax include a spa service, foot
reflexology, 15 minute head & shoulder massages and
manicures & pedicures. A business centre is equipped
with four PC's with internet access, a fax and
photocopying service and conference
room.
7)Eos Bankruptcy Yet another airline has
filed for bankruptcy with the loss of 450 jobs and debts
that sources estimated at $34.9m. Eos - the
business class only airline that had previously seen off
competitor Maxjet was a surprising addition to the
rising toll of failed airlines as its business model was
viewed as relatively robust, particularly as it went
bust with a fairly small debt. The last Eos flight
took off from London Stansted at 18:30 to New York JFK
on the 27th April 2008, with the bankruptcy coming as
something as a shock to the business class only model.
Eos had planned to start services to Dubai this summer
and the news of its demise leaves Silverjet, perhaps
somewhat surprisingly as the remaining premium carrier
operating such a long-haul premium
model.
